WALB named 2012 “Station of the Year”, “Best in Community Service”, and “Best Newscast”, (in Georgia cities outside Atlanta).
Albany television station WALB, received ten awards, from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters, Saturday night, in Atlanta. Four awards were 1st place, called “Gabbys”.
WALB also received four Merit Awards, given as runner-up to the Gabby Award.
WALB was named Television Station of the Year, and Community Service Station of the Year. WALB has been named Station of the Year, 6 of the last 7 years. Community Service Station of the year, for the 8th consecutive year.
WALB News 10 received the Best Newscast GABBY, for: “6pm Storm Coverage”. WALB received a Gabby for Best Station-Produced Commercial for “Lee Optical”, produced by Jerry Nolan
WALB News 10's Dawn Hobby won the Merit award for Best News Story for her story: “Harlem Barber Shop”, best News feature: “50th Anniversary of the Albany Movement”,
Another Merit Award to Sports Director: Robert Hydrick, for best sports story: “Munir's Challenge”. And best station promo: “The Locker Room Report, Jeans”, produced by Josh Morey.
In a special presentation, WALB received the “Minuteman Award”, from the Army National Guard for excellence in Public Service. Also “The Georgia Operation Lifesaver Award”, for excellence in promoting rail~highway crossing safety.
WALB competed against all Georgia stations, outside Atlanta, (Atlanta competes in its own large market category). Other Georgia markets include: Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Savannah, and Thomasville.
WALB Vice President & General Manager Jim Wilcox commented: “We’re very pleased that our staff was recognized by other broadcasters, for our work in serving the community. WALB is in the smallest television market in the state, so these awards reflect our level of commitment to our viewers. My personal thanks to each of our dedicated employees.”
The Georgia Association of Broadcasters recognizes excellence in broadcasting statewide, with its annual “GABBY” Awards banquet. The 2012 winners were announced at the G.A.B. awards banquet, at the Crown Plaza Ravinia in Atlanta, June 2nd.
