WTVR - Richmond, Virginia
Television
and WTVR-TV got its start in Richmond back in the Spring of 1948, when
WTVR-TV, the South’s Very First Television Station signed on the air. It
was almost seven years before any of WTVR-TV's competitors began
broadcasting. During this seven year period, WTVR-TV was broadcasting
the best available programming from all four networks including the now
defunct Dumond Network. WTVR-TV became a CBS affiliate in 1961 and has
enjoyed the dominant share of viewing in the ADI ever since.
Broadcast pioneer, Roy H. Park,
purchased the station from Wilbur Havens in 1966. Park owned the station
until 1997, when Raycom Media, Inc. acquired the CBS affiliate.
Over the past 20 years, WTVR-TV has been recognized as one of the top-10 CBS network affiliates in the country.
