WWBT/NBC 12's landmark, state-of-the-art facility on Midlothian Turnpike, signed on in 1956 with a 15-minute newscast. From 1968 to early 2008, it had been operated continuously by Jefferson Pilot Communications which merged into Lincoln Financial Media in 2006. On April 1, 2008, NBC12 became a member of the Raycom Media family. Throughout the station's 50 + year history, NBC12 has led the way in Central Virginia television and for the past 2 decades has held the top spot as Richmond's number one source for news and entertainment and counts itself one of the strongest NBC affiliates in the country. As the market leader, NBC12 has had many "firsts" including the first with live satellite trucks, first with Doppler Radar and first to transmit in High Definition.
It really begins with the commitment of NBC12 On Your Side. This promise, of almost 25 years to Richmond viewers, means the station intends to be on their side with news, information and even a helping hand when needed. Since making this commitment, tens of thousands of area residents have been served by Call 12 volunteers or other community partners who provide assistance in a wide variety of ways. From round the clock radio simulcasts during Hurricane Isabel to the annual Salvation Army Angel Tree campaign making Christmas brighter for over 20,000 area children, NBC12 works to make a difference in the community.
Maintaining and keeping the NBC12 On Your Side promise in a high-tech world includes expanding beyond our 5 hours of daily local news to our All Access platform. By using the connections to our web, mobile and digital resources at nbc12.com, 12 On Your Cell and NBC12 First Warning Weather Plus., viewers will have no trouble getting local news alerts, podcasts or webcasts on their computer or cell phone and access to national and local weather 24/7 on NBC12 First Warning Weather Plus on Comcast channel 208.
WUPV, known on air as CW Richmond, is the CW television affiliate servicing the Richmond/Petersburg television market. The station is operated by Raycom Media though a shared services agreement as a sister to NBC affiliate WWBT.
