NewsWest9 originated as KVKM-TV, an ABC affiliate in Monahans, Texas on December 1, 1958. The station was owned by Tri-Cities Broadcasters. Tri-Cities sold the station to Grayson Enterprises in 1969, and the station was renamed KMOM-TV (standing for Monahans-Odessa-Midland). Two satellite stations were added to our lineup under their ownership: KWAB and KAVE-TV. KAVE-TV was later sold, while KWAB remains with us to this day.
Issues plagued the station throughout the 70s and was sold under a “distress” sale to the Permian Basin Television Corporation in 1980. The station swapped affiliations with KMID-TV in 1981 and became a proud NBC station. The call letters changed once again to KTPX-TV and moved to the station’s current location on County Road 127 in Midland, Texas. In 1991 Drewry Communications Group purchased the station and became known as KWES-TV, the call letters to this very day.
In December 2015, the station was sold to Raycom Media. NewsWest9/KWES-TV is the home for your favorite NBC Programming, including Sunday Night Football and shows like The Voice and This Is Us. The station also broadcasts Telemundo 20 on KTLE and is the home for the only locally produced Spanish language newscast in the Permian Basin. KWES also broadcasts the West Texas CW. We are also home to the #1 Spanish Language Radio station in the Permian Basin, KTXC – La Ley 104.7 FM.
