On November 7, 1953, WIS-TV signed on the air with a live broadcast of the hometown University of South Carolina Gamecocks football team defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels 18-0. In the decades that followed, the station has been committed to aggressive coverage of local news and special events. The WIS team has been honored with multiple Emmys for news excellence and most recently was named South Carolina Television Station of the Year by the South Carolina Broadcasters’ Association for the 5th time in the last 6 years. Throughout its history, WIS-TV has never relinquished its position as Columbia’s local news leader. During times of breaking news or severe weather coverage, WIS will often see audiences triple the size of its nearest competitor. Its preeminent status in the market has allowed it to extend its reach and dominance to all screens, be it desktop, mobile, or OTT.
As the country’s 77th largest television market, Columbia offers the growth and stability of a state capital and is the home to the University of South Carolina and Fort Jackson Army Training Center.
