WOIO is one of America’s strongest CBS affiliates, home to America’s Number One prime time lineup and syndicated favorites such as The Price Is Right, Jeopardy and Wheel Of Fortune. Through its affiliation with CBS, WOIO is home to The NFL on CBS, NCAA College Football, NCAA College Basketball including the “March Madness” Basketball Tournament, and several premiere golf events including The Masters. WOIO is also the home of Cleveland 19 News, which launched in August of 2015. In addition to covering the stories that affect Northeast Ohio residents in newscasts ranging from early morning to late night, Cleveland 19 News is also the driving force behind community events and outreach programs as Share Your Holidays, Operation Backpack, 2Strong4Bullies, and W82TXT.
WOIO is home to two digital channels: 19.1 is Cleveland’s CBS, and 19.2 is MeTV, which showcases classic television programs from the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s.
WOIO’s Sign-On Date was May 19, 1985. In 1986, Malrite Communications Group gained majority ownership of the station, which it maintained until September 1998 when Raycom Media purchased the station.
Clevelanders have been watching WUAB-TV for nearly fifty years, when the station first signed on September 15, 1968. The station has become nationally known as the broadcast home of one of the highest profile teams in the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers. In addition to its MYNetworkTV affiliation, WUAB features Cleveland’s only 9pm newscast, followed immediately by Cleveland’s longest running Primetime Newscast, Cleveland 19 News at 10.
WUAB’s market size is 1.5 million households, which makes Cleveland the 19th largest television market in the United States. WUAB has two digital subchannels: 43.1 for My Network programming, 43.2 for Bounce, which features classic African American centric programming, and 43.3 for Grit-TV, which features classic action and suspense programming.
Originally licensed to the city of Lorain, Ohio, WUAB was initially owned by United Artists (hence the “UAB”). WUAB has had three subsequent owners, including Gaylord Broadcasting (1977-1990) and Cannell Communications (1990-2000). Raycom Media operated WUAB under a local marketing agreement with Cannell from 1996 until March 02, 2000, when it purchased WUAB under the FCC’s new Duopoly Rules.
