ABC 27 has been on the air in North Florida and South Georgia since 1976. Back then it was under the call letters WECA, letting everyone know “WE CAn do it” At that time, it became the third station in the market behind the legacy CBS and the local PBS station from Florida Station University.
Nine years later there was an ownership change to the Tallahassee 27 Limited Partnerships. Maryland Senator Joseph Tydings and Florida Congressman Lou Frey were the majority partners. As the owners changed so did the name. WECA officially became WTXL.

With this change brought about a new digital television facility in Midway, FL. Making it the first local news in high definition in the Thomasville -Tallahassee area. In May of 2017, WTXL changed hands one more time. This time to Raycom Media.
